Japanese sports festival - undoukai

This is the perfect whole school incursion to celebrate Japanese culture!
Japanese Sports Festivals or “Undoukai” are one of the most popular days of a Japanese school’s annual calendar. The whole school community comes together to celebrate a day of fun and fitness! This incursion starts off with the traditional warm up of radio exercise or “Rajio-Taisou.” Students and teachers will stretch and loosen up in time to a count of 1,2,3,4.
With participants warmed up, the events begin. Students will rotate through a number of exciting activities including 1.The Big Pants Relay, 2.The Takoyaki Run, 3. The Pole Pull (Bou-hiki), 4.The Big Ball Relay, 5.The Bean Bag Toss (Tamaire) and 6.The Pankui Race (Jumping for Rice Crackers).
A large oval is required for this incursion. Teachers will be required to assist in the running of each event. Each teacher will be provided with a happi coat to wear as they guide and direct students in their races. Students will be split into two teams and encouraged to wear a red or white T-shirt on the day.

Optional Extra - Bon Dancing
Why not include a dance component to your sports festival? In Japan, students generally perform folk dances or unique choreographed routines which have been heavily practised especially for the day. The dance option in this incursion is a whole school Bon Dance. Students, teachers and parents will be encouraged to participate in this traditional dance, making for a memorable way to end this truly fantastic Cultural Day!
