Shadow Puppets - Wayang Kulit

Shadow puppets are found in many parts of Asia and have a rich history in many cultures, but the most well known come from Indonesia. Wayang Kulit is the name given to Indonesian shadow puppets. Wayang means shadow and Kulit means skin or leather.

In this exciting incursion, students will start off by experiencing being a Dalang, the puppeteer.  They will perform their puppet show behind a cloth screen, accompanied by the tranquil music from the gamelan.

Next, students will wear batik shirts and learn to artistically fold and wear a udeng headband.  With the traditional gear on, students will make their own shadow puppets using pasteboard, split pins, paint, hammer and nails to perforate and create a unique design.

While the paint is drying on their puppets, students will play a traditional game of Suwitan, where they will be encouraged to speak in Bahasa, further enhancing this Indonesian cultural experience.
