The gold rush
During the Australian Gold Rush, many Chinese people came to Australia in search of a fortune. Students will start their journey in China as poor Chinese farmers, before sailing to Australia to get a taste of life as a Chinese digger. Students will wear traditional clothes, pigtails and carry different loads balanced on a bamboo pole, just like the diggers used to! They will “pan” for gold using gold pans and use traditional balancing scales to weigh their findings.
Students will also experience being a trooper, checking miners for their gold licences and chaining those without one to a log! Through these experiences, students will be exposed to the harsh realities of life as a Chinese digger, at the same time appreciate the contributions these first Chinese settlers have made to our beautiful nation.
In addition to our focus on Chinese miners, our activities look at other important aspects of early Australian history, shining light on bushrangers, convict transportation and the importance of the Eureka Stockade.
